John,
I agree about the risks relating to low capacity devices - but at least
they are controlled, and auditable, via the authorised users desktop/server.
But I am talking about powerful 'open access' (shared) office machines.
They are different because anyone can e-mail direct from the machine (ie:
they don't have to send to their own PC first), to any address - internal,
or external. And their capacity to copy to multiple sites is huge. At a
minimum, access controls (passwords/pin numbers/cards) and strict business
rules seem essential; but we may also need to block certain functionality.
Mike.
Subject: Re: Multi-function copiers - RM risks
John Lovejoy said: While these are all valid risks, are they any greater
than the use of existing stand alone fax machines and photocopiers? People
can fax off documents now, without a trace. People can photocopy documents
now, again without a trace. If you are talking about the low capacity
devices which are usually linked to a computer, then I suspect that the
limited capacity of the devices would mean that there would be less
likelihood of someone using them to copy/fax off a ream of documents than
if they used a traditional photocopier/fax machine. My own opinions, no one
elses. John Lovejoy. [log in to unmask]
