medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I don't have a source but I understand that the logic was that the purity of
the water would reject the impurity of a witch. Somewhere I acquired the
conviction that they actually tied a rope around the person undergoing the
ordeal so that if they sank (the pure water accepting the innocent),. they
would not drown but be pulled out not too much the worse for a ducking.

A good question. I always thought that someone turned that around for
humorous
purposes and that it was originally that one would not drown if innocent.
Does
anyone have the souces for this?
