medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. November) is the feast day of:
Malo (d. c. 621) Malo (Machutus or Maclou) was a Welshman who went
to Brittany as a missionary. His headquarters was at a place now
known as St-Malo, but resentful non-Christians forced him and his
monks to withdraw for sme years to Saintes.
Desiderius (Didier) (d. 655) The son of a Frankish noble, Desiderius
became an official at the Neustrian court and bishop of Cahors in 630
(replacing his murdered brother). D. founded monasteries, built
churches, disciplined the clergy, and in general behaved like a very
good bishop by seventh-century standards.
Fintan of Rheinau (d. 879) Fintan was a native of Leinster, enslaved
by Viking pirates and taken to the Orkneys. He escaped and, after
some time in Scotland, went on a pilgrimage to Rome. On his way
home, he stopped at Rheinau in the Black Forest and ended up joining
the hermits there for the last 22 years of his life.
Leopold of Austria (d. 1136) Leopold became margrave of Austria at
the age of 23, marrying a daughter of Emperor Henry IV and producing
18 children. He founded several monasteries and was known for piety
and charity. He was canonized in 1486.
Albertus Magnus (d. 1280) Albert, the "universal doctor," was a
Swabian of noble family who became a Dominican while studying at the
U. of Padua. He became one of the great scholars of his century,
teaching for the most part in Cologne. He was canonized and declared
a doctor of the church in 1931.
Hugh Faringdon and companions (d. 1539) (blessed) Faringdon was
abbot of Reading. He refused to surrender his monastery when Henry
VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries. He and two monks of
the community were executed at the abbey gate. Today are also
commemorated the abbot and two monks of Glastonbury, who died in
similar circumstances. All were beatified in 1895.
