Of interest is this 1998 article by Niels Christian Hvidt; it has an
interview with the Patriarch who describes what he sees and experiences when
he receives the Holy Fire.

Details of its earliest history are sketchy... "One can trace the miracle
throughout the centuries in the many itineraries to the Holy Land. The
Russian abbot Daniel, in his itinerary, written in the years 1106-07, in
very detailed manners presents the "Miracle of the Holy Light" and the
ceremonies that frame it." "..one can read about it in sources as old as
from the eighth Century AD."
