medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear distinguished fellows
As far as I can see from several sources was there a considerable
confusion about the true identity and feast day of Saint Regnault
(seu René) - alias Renatus ep., venerated in Angers as a bishop
confessor on 12th November. In the 13th cent. was he apparently
deliberately identified with a legendary hermit who lived in
a grotto near Sorrento, to serve the political course of Charles
d'Anjou.
The Saint Regnault that concerns me was, however, persistently
placed in calendars on 13th September. Nowhere can I found an
explanation for this day.
There might have been more than one saint by the name in play.
One source has 'Regnault' on 19th April, three on 12th October,
only two has him on 12th November, where he can be recognised.
(This does not include liturgical sources from Angers, of course)
At least 9 sources document the mystery day September 13th.
Clarification on this point might be very useful in locating
the origin of the tradition apparently limited to the first
half of the 15th cent. (c.1400-c.1460)
Every clue will be highly appreciated
Thanks
Erik Drigsdahl
