medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. November) is the feast day of:
Edmund the Martyr (d. 870) Edmund became king of the East Angles in
855 at the age of 14. He was captured by Danes during their great
invasion of England. He refused to collaborate with them and was
executed, apparently in a ritual sacrifice.
Bernward of Hildesheim (d. 1022) The Saxon Bernward was an imperial
chaplain and tutor to Otto III, for which he was rewarded with the
see of HIldesheim in 993. He built St. Michael's monastery there,
commissioned several major bronze works that are among the crowning
achievements of Ottonian art, and was a good bishop. B. was
canonized in 1193.
Felix of Valois (d. 1212) Felix was a French hermit who, with his
disciple John of Matha, created the Trinitarian order, dedicated to
ransoming captives from the Muslims. The cult of both men was
approved in 1666; the order claims that they were indeed canonized in
1262.
