DAAD Essay Competition 2004/2005
"But don't mention the war"

are pathetically stuck in a world view that's more than half a century

Brief
We know about the clichés John Cleese refers to but what are your
personal experiences with contemporary Germany and all things German?
Whether you have been on a trip to Germany, feel inspired by a book
you've read, or have made a new friend, please share your experience
with us by sending in your essay.
Eligibility
All undergraduate students registered for a Bachelor's degree or
equivalent at a UK university, except German nationals, are eligible.
The competition is open to students of all subject areas and not
restricted to students of German.
Submissions
Please hand in an essay style composition of up to 3000 words maximum,
either in English or German. Additional textual or visual material such
as poems, photographs, graphic illustrations etc. may be included. The
submission of one hard copy is obligatory, additional electronic
submissions are welcome.
All submissions should reach the DAAD London office by Friday, 14th
January 2005.

Jury
The best contributions will be chosen by a German-British specialist
panel from different subject areas (including journalists, academics
and representatives of cultural organisations) in March/April 2005.
Winners will be notified in April/May 2005.
The jury will judge the essays on the following main criteria:
- originality
- insight
- presentation
Awards
Prizes are awarded in two categories (English and German) and include:
- One week’s work experience at the BBC World Service (radio) programme
'Europe Today' / London
- One month’s work experience at the Deutsche Welle World / Bonn
- 4 summer courses at German universities (either German language
courses or specialist courses held in English or German)
- cash prizes of £300
- book prizes
A prize-winning ceremony will be held at the German Embassy in London
in May 2005, where the German Ambassador will present the prizes.
