APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTINGS
RGS-IBG Annual International Conference, London, 31 August - 2 September 2005
Dear All,
We have had a good response to the first call for papers, and thank those who have already expressed an interest. However, we are still looking for additional papers to be presented during the session titled 'Universities and the knowledge-based economy', which is sponsored by the EGRG. A more detailed abstract of the session is attached below - anyone interested in presenting should send an expression of interest or provisional abstract to Tim Vorley - [log in to unmask] or visit www.geog.le.ac.uk/staff/trv1/rgs.htm
SESSION TITLE
Universities and the knowledge-based economy
SESSION CONVENORS
Tim Vorley
Helen Lawton Smith
SESSION ABSTRACT
The knowledge based economy has necessitated a widespread reassertion of the
economic, the political and the cultural. Universities are fundamentally
associated with the emergence of the knowledge based economy, although they
have themselves experienced a radical evolution. No longer are universities
perceived as public institutions restricted by nationally and regionally
imposed boundaries, with an emphasis solely on blue sky scientific research.
Instead universities have reasserted themselves as 'supraspatial'
quasi-public institutions pursuing both scientific and commercial interests.
This typological revolution of universities sees them assume a dominant
position within the knowledge economy with varying success as an
entrepreneurial culture seeks to permeate all aspects of the university.
Best regards,
Tim Vorley
