Dear all,
I wish to tell you about a project I am doing and ask for your contribution.
Time to think equal is a discussion and research project run in partnership
with Enable Enterprises and Scope.
The aim of the project is to bring people together disabled people from all
backgrounds to discuss the construction of impairment within a rights and
social model context.
The outcome would be a statement of values and beliefs, based on evidence
and would be a working model of impairment which could be used by Scope and
others to provide a better understanding of impairment and disability as a
lived experience, which means these being translated into staff training,
policies etc. An example of a statement would be that ‘All impairments are
of equal status and cannot be given comparable value in terms of their
attributes or people’s understanding of them’. The research will answer the
questions “What is disability?” and “What is impairment?”
Through discussion and debate with disabled people at many levels, the
project will aim to achieve a consensus in creating a working model or
construct of impairment within a lived experience, and build common bonds
across the disabled community in so doing.
It is important to set some clear ground rules which are as follows:
• Equality
• The social model – or rights-based model – of disability
• Rights & responsibilities
• No hierarchy of impairment
• Anti-disablism
• Different impairments – same disability
• Confidentiality
• Constructive debate, not destructiveness

I am also interesting in finding out what existing reason as been done in
the field.
Many thanks,
