Where I am at, we starting teaching on January 4th. But I'm in
Ontario. In the US, most universities with fifteen- or sixteen-week
semesters also start by the end of the first week of January, though
occasionally during the second week. There are smaller liberal arts
colleges that don't start until later in the month, but they don't have
very large geography departments, and hence wouldn't send many faculty
anyway. These anecdotes suggest that January is also bad time for North
Americans.
And most of these US schools also start in late August, which conflicts
with the IBG times, as Simon notes.
my two cents
