BEYOND THE MARKET
Public services in the twenty-first century
Organised by Catalyst and the Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust
Saturday 27 November, 9:30am - 5:30pm
City University, Northampton Square, London EC1
Universal tax-funded services can offer a unique social space, "beyond
contracts, markets and exchange", and governed by principles of equality,
citizenship, and a common good. Today there is strong popular demand for
enlarging and investing in them. Yet at the same time this vital public
domain faces new pressures, from the economic forces of an internationalised
capitalism and a dominant culture of individualistic consumerism.
This major pre-election conference brings together those who use public
services and those who work in them, campaigning activists and trade
unionists, along with sympathetic politicians and policy experts. Its aim is
to help forge a positive agenda and a new progressive alliance for renewing
and developing public services in the twenty-first century.
