The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has today published a free report which
explores the experiences of young people (15-27 years) affected by parental
drug and/or alcohol misuse.
Parental drug and alcohol misuse, by Angus Bancroft, Sarah Wilson, Sarah
Cunningham-Burley, Kathryn Backett-Milburn and Hugh Masters of the Centre
for Research on Families and Relationships at the University of Edinburgh,
is based on personal accounts of young people and focuses on an area where
there has been little qualitative research to date. It explores the
childhoods, pathways to independence and the daily practices and coping
strategies employed by the young people, outlining some of the long term
effects of parental substance misuse, highlighting the social processes,
attitudes and experiences underlying the association of parental substance
use with current and future risk.
Parental drug and alcohol misuse is available as a free PDF download or can
be purchased as a paperback report, price £13.95 plus postage and packing,
from http://www.jrf.org.uk/bookshop/details.asp?pubID=636. A free summary
is also available from
http://www.jrf.org.uk/knowledge/findings/socialpolicy/064.asp. Please do
not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information.
