Mundane measurement is not an option!
The mathematical theme for the NRICH site
(<http://www.nrich.maths.org/public/index.php>) this month is "measurement
and trigonometry". The problems aim to stimulate discussion and thinking
about measurement including its relevance, variety and scope both in and
out of the mathematics classroom.
For some "real world problems" how about trying
Sizewise(<http://www.nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2372&part=ind
ex&refpage=monthindex.php>), Chocoholics
(<http://www.nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2416&part=index&refpa
ge=monthindex.php>)and An Unhappy End
(<http://www.nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2384&part=index&refpa
ge=monthindex.php>)?
This month's game is Square It
(<http://www.nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2526&part=index&refpa
ge=monthindex.php>). Its purpose is to challenge misconceptions about the
properties of squares in a stimulating and thought-provoking way - squares
do not always have horizontal and vertical sides.
There are also four articles this month including one for teachers on the
history of
weight(<http://www.nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2440&part=index
&refpage=monthindex.php>).
Don't forget to use the Maths Finder to find some of our past measurement
problems, games and articles.
Courses this term include Primary Investigations on 12th November and
Secondary Problem Solving on the 19th November. See the site for more
details (<http://www.nrich.maths.org/public/courses.php>).
Best wishes,
The NRICH Team
