medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. October) is the feast day of:
Abercius (d. c. 200) Abercius was a Phrygian, apparently a bishop of
Hierapolis---although it has also been suggested that he was a priest
of Cybele. An inscription on his tomb tells that when A was 72 he
was summoned to Rome by the emperor to exorcise his daughter. A
hagiographer later used this as a basis for a highly derivative and
exaggerated vita.
Philip of Heraclea (d. 304) Philip was bishop of Heraclea (near
Byzantium), arrested during the great persecution. He and his deacon
Hermes both refused to turn over their church's books to the
authorities, or to sacrifice. They were tortured, spent seven months
in prison, and were finally burned to death.
Mallonius (Mellon) (d. 314) Mallonius was the first bishop of Rouen.
A later legend makes him a native of Cardiff (Wales), who converted
while in Rome and was sent to Gaul as a missionary by the pope.
Nunilo and Alodia (d. 851) Nunilo and Alodia were natives of Huesca
(Spain), the daughters of a Muslim father and a Christian mother.
They were raised as Christians and decided to live as dedicated
virgins, which outraged their Muslim stepfather to the point that he
got them arrested in Abd ar-Rahman II's persecution of Christians.
Every effort was made to get them to give up and accept their
paternal faith, including consigning them to a brothel, but they were
eventually beheaded.
Donatus of Fiesole (d. c. 876) Legend tells that Donatus was an
Irishman who went on pilgrimage to Rome in 829, but stopped off in
Fiesole on his return just when the people were electing a new
bishop. A miracle showed that D. should be chosen, and so he never
made it home again.
