Inspired by the Past
Study Day
Saturday 6th November, 10am - 4pm
(Registration 10am - 10.30am)
This fascinating Study Day will take a look at the ways in which historic collections of textiles have inspired previous generations, and how they continue to be a rich source of ideas for designers today. Contributions from curators offer an historical perspective; while other speakers will explore the ways in which historic textiles continue to inform both mass market products and new art works.
Inspired by the Past accompanies MoDA's exhibition of Italian textiles, Woven Splendour, and there will be an opportunity to visit the exhibition during the lunch-break.
The speakers are:
Carole Oates, Commercial Manager, MoDA - MoDA's Silver Studio collections provide a unique record of design for the home from the mid-nineteenth century to 1960. This paper looks at the way that the museum's collections are used as the basis for new design ideas which result in successful commercial products.
Daniela Degl'Innocenti, Curator, Museo del Tessuto - Italian textile designers have always looked to their country's rich heritage as a source of inspiration for new work. This paper will look in more detail at some of the textiles in Woven Splendour and at other examples from the collections of the Museo del Tessuto.
Lesley Hoskins, Curator, MoDA - William Morris was one of the most celebrated designers of the nineteenth century. He used historic sources such as the collections of the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) to inform his work. This paper will explore some of his influences, and examine the ways in which Morris's designs have now become historic sources themselves.
Ana Fonseca - Fine artist Ana Fonseca explains how she uses historic sources to inform and inspire her current works.
Prices: £22.00 or £12.00 concessions. An optional buffet lunch is available at £6.50 per person.
