medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There were apparently a number of different vestments that bore the name
'cappa.' In my own research on Jewish Law in late Medieval and Renaissance
Italy I came across references to two such garments. One is called
the'cappa manicata' which is sort of an apron and worn by clergy during
Divine Office. Another, the 'cappa clausa' was worn by monks and cathedral
school instructors (and later by university faculty and physicians). Not
all cappae were ecclesiastical. In the thirteenth century, the Jewish
German pietists wore a cappa with four corners in order to allow them to
wear ritual fringes (tzitzit) all of the time (and not just at prayer as
had become customary).
One book I used (though old it's still useful) was RJS MacAlister,
Ecclesiastical Vestments, London 1910. As I recall, the various Histories
of Clothing in French and Italian also discuss the cappa.
