"Taking a child to the library is the single most important thing parents can do to give their child a good start in life" (Cathy Silver of the
Institute
of Education in evidence to the Commons Education Select Committee, May
2004).
Families learning are the future for us all and Public Libraries are uniquely
placed to provide the freedom for families to learn together at their own
pace.
This year's Branch and Mobile Libraries Group Weekend School features the usual mix of practical projects and thought-provoking discussion set within a
national and strategic context.
This year the School is held in the glorious city of Edinburgh, described by
Robert Louis Stevenson as what Paris ought to be. Saturday evening
features a ghost walk around the haunted sites of the city. Thanks to the magic of cheap flights and internet booking, the School is less than an hour
and a half from any UK airport, for the cost of a couple of tanks of petrol.
Examples of flight costs for the weekend are: Belfast £53.80, Birmingham £88.10, Exeter £77.30, London Heathrow £69.40, Manchester £61.60.
