School of Geosciences, Australian Crustal Research Centre
Monash University, Clayton Campus, Australia

Postgraduate research opportunities exist at Monash University for dedicated
and enthusiastic students wishing to further their knowledge and widen their
career horizons. Applications are currently being sought from students with
outstanding academic records who wish to pursue a career within the field of
geosciences.

The Australian Crustal Research Centre (ACRC) is dedicated to the
understanding the tectonic processes in the Earth's crust, by integrating
field observations, geochronology, geochemistry, regional geophysical
datasets, laboratory analogue experiments, and computer simulation. Four
encompassing research programs have been established within the ACRC -
Tectonics and Regional Geophysics; Geodynamic Modelling and Simulation;
Volcanic, Magmatic and Geochemical Processes; and Ore Deposit Geoscience.

The Centre is part of the School of Geosciences at the Clayton Campus of
Monash University. The School is renowned for its high standards in teaching
and research, with wide ranging research expertise in tectonics, structural
geology, volcanology, geochemistry, geophysics, environmental geology,
remote sensing, and palaeontology. As a co-member of the Victorian Institute
of Earth and Planetary Sciences (VIEPS), added flexibility and a greater
range of resources are available to postgraduate students of the School.

Potential PhD research projects for 2005 include 3D visualisation and
modeling of complex geological architecture and systems at scales ranging
from ore-deposits to the craton-scale; Geophysical interpretation and
forward modelling of trans-lithospheric shear zones; Integrated
microstructural and textural studies involving in situ chemical analyses of
selected minerals using hi-tech equipment (laser ablation ICP MS,
microprobe, MC ICP MS); Numerical and analogue modelling of lithospheric
and crustal process, including plate deformation and reconstructions;
Geochemical, geophysical and structural characterisation of the Precambrian
Earth with an emphasis on the Broken Hill, Gawler Ranges, Yilgarn and Mt Isa
provinces of Australia; Geochemical and geophysical studies of unusual
volcanic centres in the North Island of New Zealand and the Newer Volcanic
Province in southern Australia; and Physical volcanology in Earth history:
modern, ancient, applied, eruption styles and contributing factors,
dispersal processes, tectonic significance.

The university has built a comprehensive support network, designed to
accommodate the diverse needs of international students. Graduates of Monash
University have a reputation as independent learners, innovators and
leaders, and so are widely sought after by international employers.

Please send a letter of interest and your current curriculum vitae to Ms
Megan Hough at the Australian Crustal Research Centre for further
information and an application kit for postgraduate research scholarships.
Interested parties please note that scholarship applications must be
submitted by 31 October 2004. For specific project details, please visit
