medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. September) is the feast day of:
Ferreolus (d. 304) Ferreolus was a Christian tribune in the imperial
army stationed at Vienne. He was arrested and imprisoned, escaped
thanks to a (rather short-term) miracle, was recaptured and beheaded.
Methodius of Olympus (d. c. 311) According to Jerome, Methodius was
bishop of Olympus (Lycia) and then Tyre. He was a famous preacher
and scholar who wrote several treatises including a refutation of
Origen's teahcing on the resurrection. He was martyred at Chalcis,
Greece.
Richardis (d. c. 895) Richardis was a daughter of a count of Alsace
and was married off to King (later Emperor) Charles the Fat. Charles
accused her of adultery with the bishop of Vercelli, and R. proved
her innocence by passing an ordeal by fire. She then went to live as
a nun, founding a convent at Andlau.
A modern saint: Joseph of Cupertino (d. 1663) Joseph Desa was the
son of a poor family who, despite complaints of clumsiness and
stupidity, eventually became a servant to the Franciscans at
Grottela, gradually winning his way to the noviciate and ordination.
It was the beginning of a remarkably flamboyant mystical career---his
ecstasies especially marked by levitation (witnessed by numerous
reputable people). J. proved to be an amazing sensation and pilgrims
flocked to him, despite his being kept in strict seclusion by his
superiors. He was canonized in 1767 and is now the patron saint of
pilots and astronauts.
