medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
>Today (17. September) is the feast day of:
>
>A modern saint: Robert Bellarmine (d. 1621) Robert Bellarmine became
>a Jesuit over paternal protests and became a brilliant preacher. His
>career included serving as professor and then rector of the Roman
>College, preparation of the Clementine revision of the Vulgate,
>acting as papal theologian, and becoming a cardinal and archbishop of
>Capua. He was the greatest apologist of the Catholic Reformation.
>RB was canonized in 1930 and declared a doctor of the church in 1931.
In addition, Robert Bellarmine is the only saint I'm aware of who has a type of jug named after him <g>.
Pottery jugs decorated with seals and other motifs stamped into the damp clay before firing became popular around this time, and one such common embellishment was a bearded man's face stamped on the shoulder of the bottle, on the front just below the neck. The rather stern expression on the face, especially on such a common, everyday object (and one used for strong drink, at that!) seems to have prompted contemporaries to call the bottle after the Cardinal. I have a nice reproduction "Bellarmine" made by a California potter who specializes in period replicas.
