Thanks Kevin,
It's pretty scandalous that libraries aren't mentioned anywhere in this
report given their traditional role as information points in the community
and the work that's been going on in libraries to provide information
resources on child care and parenting since even before SureStart was a
gleam in a politician's eye. Scandalous, but not surprising. In an ideal
world, DCMS would be in there talking to other central government
departments, championing the use of public libraries as long-established and
well-used* information resources within the community. In the real world
that seems to be up there with world peace and a third series of "Fawlty
Towers." Sigh...

Subject: Information on parenting
The research folk at the Home Office have come up with a report on
Meeting parents’ needs for information: evidence from the 2001 Home Office
Citizenship Survey.
There's a pdf available here -
http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/whatsnew1.html

They look at informal and formal sources of information for a range of
categories of parents. I find no mention of libraries. From the intro -
"Formal sources are defined in the HOCS as those provided by organisations
such as social services, health services, religious organisations and family
charities such as the National Family and Parenting Institute. Informal
sources of advice and help are defined as that provided by relatives or
friends and neighbours."
