I'm dealing with a pre-1974 landfill site where gas emission rates have become a particularly contentious matter. Flow meters have indicated low, but significant rates. The consultants believe this is not a fair reflection of the site and have attributed it to inaccuracies in the methodology. They now propose to use a recirculation method, flushing the well with inert gas then cycling the atmosphere from the sampling point through a measuring instrument. The period taken to achieve a steady state can then be used to calculate the free flow emissions. I have not had any experience with this procedure and would welcome any comments (positive or negative) that anyone might be able to contribute.
