The Department of Sociology is recruiting three research fellows for the
European Commission funded project: "Ethical diversity and regulatory
harmonisation: an empirical exploration of research ethics committees
following the Directive on Good Clinical Practice".
This project is a three-year, four-country comparative qualitative study of
ethics committees in the UK, Hungary, Portugal and Sweden, with the aims of:
- exploring the way in which ethics committees assess clinical trials
protocols for ethical suitability; - assessing which variations are
necessarily a consequence of local cultural differences, and which are not;
- highlighting the way in which European pharmaceutical harmonisation can
incorporate ethical diversity and develop best practice for ethics
committees.
The project will be led by Dr. Adam Hedgecoe, who will also carry out the
UK-based research. Each research fellow will:
- be fluent in Hungarian, Portuguese or Swedish and will also have a good
working knowledge of English; - will have between 4 and 10 years
postgraduate research experience (e.g. a Ph.D. + postdoctoral experience);
- will have a background in the social sciences and experience of interview
based and/or ethnographic research.
Knowledge of ethics committees or pharmaceutical regulation will be useful
but not essential.
Closing date: 20 August 2004
