medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. August) is the feast day of:
Emygdius (d. 304) Legend tells that Emygdius was a German living in Trier who converted to Christianity. He went to Rome and there destroyed a cult statue in a temple, after which he was driven out of town by a mob. Legend further tells that Pope Marcellus I consecrated E. as a bishop (which is chronologically impossible) and sent him to evangelize around Ascoli Piceno. He was then arrested and beheaded during Diocletian's persecution. E. is, by the way, the patron saint against earthquakes.
Nathy (6th cent.) Nathy was from Liughne (Co. Sligo, Ireland) and became a disciple of Finnian of Clonard, who made him a bishop. His cult was confirmed in 1903.
Felim (6th cent.) This Irish saint was one of the followers of ColumCille. He is regarded as the first bishop of Kilmore, Ireland.
Oswald of Northumbria (d. 642) Oswald's father, King Aethelfrith of Northumbria, was killed when O. was young. As a result, O was raised in Scotland, where he converted to Christianity. In 634 he was able to take the throne of Northumbria, which he attributed to the spiritual intervention of St. ColumCille. O. brought Aidan to preach Christianity in his kingdom and supported him in every way, including translating for him. O. was killed in battle at the age of 37.
A modern saint: Thomas Palasser (blessed) (d. 1600) Palasser was an English Catholic. He studied at Rheims and Valladolid and was ordained in 1596, after which he went to England to minister to the Catholic population. He was captured almost immediately, escaped, was captured again, and was executed at Durham in 1600.
