medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (3. August) is the feast day of:
Gamaliel (1st cent.) Gamaliel was a Jew, a major talmudic scholar who was a teacher of St. Paul. According to tradition, he converted to Christianity.
Lydia Purpuraria (1st cent.) Lydia of Thyatira, a dealer in purple, was Paul's first known convert.
Waltheof of Walthen (d. c. 1160) Waltheof was a son of the earl of Huntingdon. He went with his mother Maud to Scotland when she married King David I. W. became an Augustinian canon but later moved to the Cistercian order. He was named abbot of the newly founded monastery of Melrose, where he was known for his austere life and care of the poor; reputedly he performed miracles. He was named archbishop of St. Andrews in 1154 but refused the honor.
Anthony the Roman (d. 1148) Although raised in the Latin church, Anthony sided with Orthodoxy in the Great Schism. He became a hermit, living on a rock at sea for 18 months. Finally the rock broke loose and floated him to Novgorod (which sounds both geologically and geographically implausible). A. built a church there and attracted disciples, in time forming a monastic community dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Augustine Gazotich (d. 1323) Augustine was a Dominican, a missionary to the Slavs and Hungarians (I didn't think the Hungarians still needed missionaries in the fourteenth century). In 1303 he was appointed bishop of Zagreb. A. was beatified in 1700.
