medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. July) is the feast day of:
Mary Magdalen (1st cent.) Mary was a follower of Jesus. Thanks to
her identification with the unnamed sinner who anointed Jesus' feet,
she has throughout Christian history been the model repentant sinner.
Thanks to her identification with Mary the sister of Martha and
Lazarus, she is used as the model of the contemplative life. Unlike
these two, Mary of Magdala was possessed by seven devils (Mark 16:9),
ministered to Jesus (Luke 8:2), was present at the crucifixion, and
was one of the discoverers of the empty tomb. She was also the first
person to see the resurrected Jesus. An ancient tradition says that
she went with the apostle John to Ephesus and died there; a later
western legend tells that she and Martha and Lazarus went to Provence.
Joseph of Palestine (d. c. 356) Joseph was a disciple of Rabbi
Hillel. He became head of the synagogue in Tarsus but his
congregation caught him reading the gospels and kicked him out,
throwing him into the Cydnus River in the process. So J. converted
to Christianity. He built several churches in Galilee and ended up
in Scythopolis, where he sheltered refugees from the Arian
persecution.
Wandregisilus (Wandrille) (d. 668) Wandrille was a noble, born near
Verdun. He was a courtier, but in c. 628 he and his wife agreed to
separate and become a monk and nun (respectively). W soon moved from
monastery to hermitage, then went on to found Fontenelle in Normandy.
A pair of modern saints: Philip Evans and John Lloyd (d. 1679)
Evans was a Welsh Jesuit; his fellow Welshman John Lloyd studied in a
continental seminary and became a priest. Both returned to Wales to
minister to the Catholic population, and both were arrested and
charged with involvement in the Titus Oates plot. They were executed
at Cardiff on the same day, and canonized among the 40 Martyrs of
England and Wales in 1970.
