Alexandra Palace Theatre Pit
The project, supervised by a Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS)
Senior Archaeologist, is due to start on July 19th 2004 (provisional) and to
last for eight weeks (Sept 17 projected finish), for the Alexandra Palace
Charitable Trust. The aim is to clear out the Theatre Pit at Alexandra
Palace with a team of c 10 volunteers (in any given week). The Theatre was
built in 1875 and closed in the 1930s. The Pit still houses the machinery
for lifting the scenery. We are aiming to clear all the debris within which
are parts of the old theatre workings, locate the artefacts of interest,
lift them out of the pit, lay them out on the stage for a theatre specialist
to study. All the remaining debris will be lifted out of the pit and thrown
down a chute into a skip.
Volunteers who wish to work in the pit will need to be fit and agile as the
conditions are cramped and difficult to access. A few volunteers can work
laying out the finds.
We are looking ideally for volunteers who can commit reasonable blocks of
time to the project eg 1 week plus to form the backbone of the project, but
those wishing to work occasional days will be welcome where they can be
fitted in.
Working days would be Mon-Fri 8.30-4.30, with lunch and morning tea break
included. There are currently no firm plans for working weekends, although
this may occur on an occasional basis.
MoLAS will provide all necessary equipment and health and Safety gear
(helmet etc), with the exception of steel toe capped boots - which you
should provide yourself. Please note walking boots without steel toecaps
will not meet legal health and safety requirements. There will also be a
short Health and Safety induction given the nature of the task and the
working environment.
We will pay £5 per day travel expenses where necessary.
I'll be the point of contact for the next couple of weeks should you wish to
let us know when and if you're available. We would be happy for you to be
involved in the project. At the moment I have few details about where
exactly to go etc on the day beyond those listed above. The project manager
will be Chris Thomas. Volunteers should contact me at the address below.
Thanks
Ian
