Stata works well on the Mac platform. I also agree with Thomas Koening,
that you should decide what types of things you want to do before investing
time and money in learning a new computer package. For instance I'm still
using QSR's N4 for my qualitative coding work, because I have not been
convinced that the other packages do anything that I need significantly
better to justify the time and expense of learning them. [Which is not to
say that I wouldn't benefit from picking up Nvivo, Qualrus, Atlas, or any
of the others, certainly I would; but not enough to justify the investment
at this point in time].
Back to statistical software: I was weaned on SPSS because that's what we
used at my various universities. I now use Stata for quantiative work
because it does so many things better (more efficiently and accurately)
that the time and expense of learning it was justified.
