Hello Martin,
In Spine no 1 1004 Yelland reported a RCT on prolotherapy:
> Yelland, M.J.
> Prolotherapy injections, saline injections, and exercises for chronic
> low-back pain : a randomized trial / Yelland, M.J., ; Glasziou, P.P., ;
> Bogduk, N., ; Schluter, P.J., ; McKernon, M., ; -
> Spine - Vol. 29, no. 1 (2004) ; p. 9-16
"Prolotherapy is a treatment for chronic nponspecific low back pain that
involves a protocol of ligament injections, exercises and vitamin and
mineral supplements.
It is based on the premise that back pain results from weakened
ligaments and that these ligaments can be strengthened by the injection
into them of irritant proliferant solutions. These solutions variously
contain phenol, glycerine of hypertonic glucose, mixed with local
anesthetic and aim to induce inflammation and deposition of collagen
fibers in the weak ligaments".
Conclusion of the RCT:
"in chronic nonspecific low-back pain, significant and sustained
reductions in pain and disability occur with ligament injections
irrespective of the solution injected or the concurrent use of exercises".
with kind regards
