medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

There was a bleeding host relic at Dijon. It is commemorated in some
books of hours, including one here at Johns Hopkins:

Garrett Library, Evergreen House, Johns Hopkins R.10
        N. France (diocese of Bourges), s. xv2. III + 170 ff. + I
Provenance: Susanne Delyon (s. xvi) (fol. 1r); T. Harrison Garrett (d.
1888).

These verses, written in red ink, are concerned with a bleeding host
relic in Dijon presented by Eugenius IV to Philip the Good in 1432; cf.
W.291 in L. M. C. Randall, Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the
Walters Art Gallery, vol. 2, pt. 2, p. 394.
The bifolium containing them was added later.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and

Hi Phyllis,

Concerning host desecration accusations I hope the following will
help.

In her book GENTILE TALES: THE NARRATIVE ASSAULT ON LATE MEDIEVAL JEWS
(Yale UP 1999), Miri Rubin mention's Pope Boniface's mandate as follows:
"By July 1295 Pope Boniface VIII had sent a mandate to the Bishop of
Paris directing him to allow Raynier Flaming, one of the richest
bourgeois of Paris, to build a chapel on the site of the alleged crime"
(44).

Her source for this statement is: 'In illo loco civitatis Parisiensis,
in quo quidam Iudei. . .', THE APOSTOLIC SEE AND THE JEWS. DOCUMENTS, I,
ed. S. Simonsohn, PIMS Texts and Studies 94, Toronto, 1988, no. 275, pp.
283-284.

If your friend has not come across this book, it is worth reading.
Rubin's bibliography is extensive and full of primary documents. Another
book that may be worthwhile is from Susan L. Einbinder's book BEAUTIFUL
DEATH: JEWISH POETRY AND MARTYRDOM IN MEDIEVAL FRANCE (Princeton UP
2002). In it she discusses the story of Jonathan the Jew in the chapter
titled 'Jonathan and His Magic Book' and also has an extensive
bibliography.

Hope this helps!

A friend is looking for a document, and I hope somebody on the list
can help with a reference (this is way out of my period, and my
university's library stinks---but he's in Berkeley, and has the world
at his fingertips in terms of libraries). It's a bull of Boniface
VIII, addressed to the bishop of Paris, dated July 17, 1295. It
grants the bishop permission to erect a chapel at the house of a Jew
that had been the site of a famous eucharistic miracle---a Jew had
stolen a consecrated host, and on Easter (of 1291, I think) a group
of Jews had tried to "slight" it, but only succeeded in making it
bleed copiously. The Jews converted. I'd also appreciate references
to any literature on this specific miraculous host shrine (or on
other shrines of eucharistic miracles).

Thanks,
Phyllis
