simple Age is no excuse for such an egregeous error.

religious foundations were clustered.
too bad my favorite pons asinorum, Baudrillart's Dictionnaire d'histoire
ecclesiastique, is only up to the Js.

crumbled.
well, the Revolution was pretty rough on a lot of places.

behind very tall gates.
the "private garden" syndrome.

ahhh.... it *is* really an island

named "Barbe", presumably.
with a famous bridge

probably for sale on eBay.
a book i need to see

Léopold Niepce was an archiviste, apparently.
interesting site, giving a whole new meaning to the term "Gated Community" :
http://www.geocities.com/erik_mccrea/links.html
SOVEREIGN STATE OF BARBE ISLAND : In 1963, Barbe Island was incorporated into
the 9th arrondissement/district of Lyon. Many citizens were dissatisfied with
this decision. Then, in 1977, 4 gentlemen (...and Auguste Bourdi, who was the
owner of the island) declared the island independent. They even pursued their
right to self-determination by petitioning the United Nations Security
Council. They also appointed consuls in various parts of Europe. Though I have
actually gotten in touch with 2 sons of two of the State's "founding fathers"
my coin came from a fellow collector, Mr. Harmon. Barbe means "beard" and this
is a 10 Poils ("hairs") coin, from circa 1978-84. There are also numerous
postage stamps from L'ile Barbe.
looks like Abbot Mayeul of Cluny studied there, before 954 :
http://www.herodote.net/histoire09111.htm
which reminds me, was there any connection between the abbey and Fleury?
any possibility that L'Ile was "reformed by Fleury??
lots of places were, in that period (St. Peter's of Chartres among them).
the Musée des Beaux-Arts seems to have a nice collection of paintings but
doesn't have its own site with any of those dull 12th c. sculptures on it.
aahhhh, the sculptures are (probably) in the Musée Historique de Lyon :
http://www.frommers.com/destinations/lyon/A25896.html
a.k.a. the "Musée Gadagne" after the 16th c. hotel housing it.
which has its own site.
*nice* key:
http://www.museegadagne.com/collections/index.html
"Le musée conserve les vestiges de trois grandes abbayes : Ainay, l’Ile
Barbe [griffon] et Savigny"
http://www.museegadagne.com/collections/histoire/index.html
though from L'Ile, the "griffon" is not in the style i'm looking for.
well, it doen't look good for finding snaps of those cloister pilasters on the
web.
