medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
> Alban of Mainz (d. c. 400) Alban was a Greek priest from Naxos. The
> Arians succeeded in getting him exiled to Mainz (Germany), where he
> settled down as a missionary. But the local Arians killed him. The
> monastery of St. Alban's in Mainz was dedicated to him, not to the
> more famous Alban of Britain.
So on the magnificent shrine & reliquary of Alban of Verulamium in the
basilica of Saint Panteleon in Cologne, he is spelled ALBINUS to distinguish
him from the chap from Mainz.
