medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. June) is the feast day of:
Marinus (4th cent.?) Legend tells that Marinus was a stonemason from
an island off the coast of Dalmatia. He became a deacon and spent
the end of his life as a hermit---his hermitage was on the site of
what is now the capital of the Republic of San Marino, named after
him.
Asterius of Petra (d. c. 362) Asterius started out as an Arian, but
converted to catholic Christianity and became bishop of Petra (modern
Jordan), where he published an account of the Arian behind-the-scenes
dirty dealing at the Council of Sardica (347). This annoyed the
Arian emperor Constantius, who exiled A., but Julian allowed him to
return to his see.
Bardo of Mainz (d. 1053) Bardo was a monk of Fulda who held several
abbacies before becoming archbishop of Mainz in 1031. Like many
German bishops, he was active in imperial service, but was also known
for love of the poor (and animals) and for leading such a vigorously
ascetic life that Leo IX suggested he ease off.
Bogumil of Gniezno (d. 1182) Bogumil was from Dobrow (Poland). He
studied in Paris, came home and became a parish priest, and then was
made archbishop of Gniezno. He resigned in 1172 and became a
Camaldolese monk. B's cult was approved in 1925.
Bonaventure Baduario (blessed) (d. 1386) Bonaventure was a nobleman
from the region of Padua who became an Augustinian friar, general of
his order, and finally a cardinal. A relative whom he had irritated
shot him (with an arrow). I don't know if anyone regards him as a
martyr.
John Dominici (blessed) (d. 1419) The Florentine Giovanni was a
Dominican who played an important role in reforming his order,
becoming in time vicar-general of the reformed friaries of Italy. In
1408 he was made cardinal archbishop of Ragusa (Dubrovnik, Croatia)
and served as papal legate in Bohemia and Hungary during the exciting
early days of Hussitism. He was also a leader in the healing of the
papal schism. His cult was confirmed in 1832.
