medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. June) is the feast day of:
Etheldreda (d. 679) Etheldreda was one of four saints who were all
daughters of King Anna of East Anglia. She married twice, but legend
tells that she refused to consummate either marriage---the second
time with the support of St. Wilfrid, who helped her become a nun at
Coldingham in 672. E. founded the great double monastery at Ely.
Her shrine in Ely cathedral was a popular pilgrimage locale, and her
hand is still kept at the Catholic church at Ely. In an odd
linguistic note, the word "tawdry" is a corruption of "St. Audrey" (=
Etheldreda) and refers to the quality of merchandise that was sold in
the saint's honor at Ely.
Colman of Lismore (d. c. 702) Colman (one of the many, many Irish
saints named Colman) became abbot-bishop of Lismore (Co. Waterford,
as anyone knows who likes fine crystal) in 698. The monastery and
its school reached a height in his reign.
Libert of Cambrai (d. 1076) Libert was a bishop of Cambrai. He
tried to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land but never got there and
went home to build a monastery dedicated to the Holy Sepulcher as the
next best thing. L. excommunicated the lord of Cambrai, who
responded by brutally persecuting L.
Peter of Juilly (blessed) (d. 1136) There is an unconfirmed cult of
Peter among the Cistercians. He was an Englishman, a companion of
St. Stephen Harding at Molesme. P. became chaplain of the
Benedictine nuns of Juilly-les-Nonnais (where Bernard's sister was
abbess). He was a miracle worker and great preacher.
Mary of Oignies (d. 1213) Mary was from Nivelles (Belgium). She was
married off at a young age but persuaded her husband not to
consummate the marriage. The couple turned their house into a leper
hospital. When M. was widowed she became a recluse attached to the
church at Oignies.
