Are other members of this list aware that many of their colleagues in Kent
are on strike today?
It would appear that KCC (Kent County Council) want to downgrade many of
the qualified librarians to non-professional posts and so pay them less or
make them redundant and employ non-professionals to do their work.
Presumably KCC see no need for qualified librarians in public libraries
which seems a massive change from the past when one could not get a
professional job at a public library unless one was Chartered.
As a member I e-mailed CILIP this morning to ask for a comment on this
situation but as yet I have had no reply.
I have no direct axe to grind here as I am not working in a public library
but as a qualified librarian I find this mass downgrading of librarian
skills more than a little worrying. Why has there been no discussion on
this group about this?
