The Scottish Natural Heritage web site has a section on Producing
Interpretive panels on their web site at
http://www.snh.org.uk/wwo/Interpretation/pdf/panels.pdf. This includes a
list of panel manufacturers, including one in your area.
Volume 3 No 1, Febraury 1998, of Interpretation, the journal of Heritage and
Environmental Interpetation is devoted to the subject of Interpretation
Panels (www.heritageinterpretation.org.uk).
You should consider materials appropriate to the site. Hence sand blasted
or etched stone or cast iron have been used elsewhere. I'm not so sure
about coal. When Queen Victoria visited Wolverhampton an arch of coal was
constructed through which she passed. How impresssed she was is not
recorded. She is famously supposed to have asked for the curtains to be
closed on her train as she passed throughh the Black Country on another
occassion. But I digress...
My tame Heritage Interpretation professional tells me that overcoming
vandalism is as much an issue of siting as material and that you really need
advice on these sort of aspects from an Interpretive specialist - such as
herself.
