Following yesterday's discussion, I wonder what effect the railways have had
on the pronunciation of station names? Cosham has a railway station, and is
pronounced "Cosh-am" by the railway. Southwick in Sussex has a railway
station, and is pronounced (as far as I am aware) "South-wick". Southwick
in Hampshire does not have a railway station, and is pronounced much as you
would expect by analogy with Southwark or Southwell: something like
"Suth-ik".
Thought, anyone?
