International Summer School in History
"New Political History"
Yaroslavl', 19 September - 2 October 2004
New Political History
A political approach to Russian and Soviet History has
never been "out" - what, then, is the New Political
History" bringing "back in"? On the other had, traditional
political history, with its record of "high politics",
with the state as principle actor, with a top-down
approach and a narrow methodology has obviously outlived
itself. Very recently, invigorated interest in political
history has generated a spate of new work that, first and
foremost, led to a dismissal of traditionally essentialist
definition of the "political". In this sense, "New
Political History" shifts the attention to the negotiation
of what is understood by contemporaries to be "political".
"The political" is thus to be understood as situational
and must be related to a concrete historical setting.
Influenced by semiotics, cultural anthropology and
everyday history "New Political History" focuses on
discursive modes and relevant practices in the negotiation
of "the political" and thus "brings in", not "back", new
subjects, new actors and methods. The Summer School will
systematically explore the innovative potential of "New
Political History" and its multifaceted engagement with
"the political". It will provide an unique forum to
discuss substantive issues and to examine chances and
limits of the approach to the histories Russian and the
Soviet Union.
