APS COLLEGE OF COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGISTS
“The past 18 months of Community Psychology has been an amazing and inspirational adventure. After four years of mainstream psychology, I felt like I had been ‘freed’, and that finally I was in a space that allowed me to explore and challenge much of what I had been taught so far.… However, this course has given me more than just ideals and dreams for the future of our communities. It has provided me with the practical skills and knowledge to transfer my visions/dreams into a ‘reality’.” (Master’s student)
Are you interested…..
• in having a wide range of choice in employment settings?
• in gaining advanced training in understanding the needs of people and their communities?
• in doing more than just mopping up after crises that could have been prevented?
• in learning more about qualitative research in real-world settings?
• in being challenged to work with people in partnerships, rather than as clients?
• in psychology with a social conscience?
Community Psychology offers all this and more. Community psychologists, while being trained as psychologists in every sense of the word, have advanced training in understanding the needs of people in their communities. They focus less on ‘problems’ and more on the strengths and competencies of community members. The aim of community psychologists is to work in partnership with people to achieve the goals and aspirations of their community or social groups.
Community psychologists occupy a variety of roles in urban and rural settings such as local government, education, community health and non-government organisations. Roles undertaken by community psychologists include:
• Program evaluation
• Staff training
• Counselling/advocacy
• Group facilitation
• Needs assessment
• Community-based research
• Project coordination
• Community consultation and policy development
• Health promotion and education
The APS College of Community Psychologists has accredited two fifth and sixth year psychology programs designed to meet the niche market for psychologists capable of working across individual, systems and community levels. At Victoria University’s Footscray campus or Edith Cowan University’s Joondalup campus, you can be part of a small, personalised student group with staff who make a real effort to ‘practise what they preach’. These courses are particularly well suited to practitioners wishing to build on their experience in the field by studying part-time.
Because Community Psychology is rarely taught at undergraduate level in Australia, the College is keen to encourage new graduates as well as experienced psychologists to find out more about this specialised area of applied research and practice. Check out the College webpage on the new APS website, come along to a college activity in your state (there are groups operating in WA, Victoria, NSW and Queensland), or contact the psychology departments at Vic Uni and ECU:
