Reconceptualising Sleep: The Contribution of the Social Sciences

Hosted by the School of Human Sciences, in association with the Surrey
Sleep Research Centre, University of Surrey, UK
The British Sleep Society has recently set up a special interest group for
social scientists researching sleep. As part of this initiative, the
School of Human Sciences at the University of Surrey is hosting a one day
seminar, entitled ‘Reconceptualising Sleep: The contribution of the social
sciences’ at the University of Surrey on Tuesday 15 June 2004.
The seminar will start at 10:30 and finish at 17:00, with Neil Stanley,
President of the BSS, introducing the day. Speakers include Professor
Sara Arber, Jenny Hislop, Dr Simon Williams, Professor Kevin Morgan, Dr
Allison Harvey and Dr Mark Cropley: all of whose work has contributed
significantly to the social scientific understanding of sleep. There will
be time allocated for questions and discussion after each talk.
Themes throughout the day include:
The role of social science in sleep research
Social scientific contributions to our understandings of sleep
Problems facing social scientists researching sleep
The contribution that the social sciences can make to a multi-
disciplinary approach to sleep research
The cost of the seminar will be £20 and will include refreshments
throughout the day, lunch and a wine reception following the event. The
