For those of you who are interested, the next meeting hosted by the Official Statistics Section of the Royal Statistical Society is:
"The impact of privatisation on statistics".
Speaker: Jean Shaoul, University of Manchester
Discussant: John Bullinger, Office for National Statistics
Privatisation in its various forms, eg asset sales, contracting out and
PFI/PPP, reduces the availability of statistics that could be used to
monitor organisational performance. Subsidies, debt guarantees, capital
grants, price rises sanctioned by regulators appointed by government, etc.,
makes it increasingly difficult to track public expenditure, scrutinise
public finances both before and after privatisation. What steps might be
taken to maintain accountability and control of public policy in the
privatisation process?
Location: Royal Statistical Society, 12 Errol Street, London, EC1Y 8LX.
Time: 5pm with tea beforehand at 4.30pm.
Date: Monday June 14th 2004.
Attendence by non-members of the Royal Statistical Society is welcomed. For further details on the society, please see www.rss.org.uk.
