medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (3. May) is the feast day of:
James the Less (d. c. 62) Or James "the Just," which sounds a bit
better. James was one of the original twelve apostles. His story
seems to be hopeless confused (a clear case of too many people named
James. This James was the son of Alphaeus, but is often identified
with James the brother of Jesus. So James the Less is often
identified as first "bishop" of Jerusalem and author of the epistle
of James---one or both of which accomplishments actually belonged to
James the brother of JC. He is usually shown in art with a club,
because he is supposed to have been beaten to death after he was
sentenced by the Sanhedrin.
Philip the Apostle (d. c. 80) Philip was one of the original twelve,
too, but his career after Pentecost is even more obscure than that of
James the Less. There are late and conflicting traditions that don't
really seem to get us anywhere.
Gluvias (Glywys) Cerniw (6th cent.) Legend says that G. was a
brother of St. Cadoc who founded a monastery in Cornwall and is
supposed to have been martyred (I assume by Saxons).
Ansfrid (d. 1010) Ansfrid was a duke of Brabant. He and his wife
got into the moanstery business, founding the convent of Thorn for
her and the monastery of Heiligen for him. But A. was made
archbishop of Utrecht. in 994; he held the office unti he went blind
in 1006, then returned to Heiligen.
Stanislaus Kazimierczyk (blessed) (d. 1489) SK was born near Cracow
and became a canon regular there in 1456. He was an important
preacher, who especially stressed the centrality of the eucharist.
His cult was confirmed in 1993.
