Hello! The Griffith's 5-Minute Clinical Consult is a *wonderful* resource; whenever I need to write example PICOs for my medical students, I consult it first. Each disease is summarized in an easy-to-view, 2-page layout. I can easily design the typical patient for the disease, as it notes gender and age groups typically affected, as well as typical signs & symptoms. The incidence & prevalence in the USA is given (great when calculating patient pre-test probability), organ systems affected, and genetics. Griffith's also provides risk factors & prognosis, differential diagnosis, lab tests, & treatment. Treatments include surgical measures, activity, diet, patient education, & medication. Complications, age-related factors, pregnancy implications, synonyms, and abbreviations are also listed. I haven't found any other resource that lists *all* these facts in such an easy-to-view layout.
With all these background facts, it's quite easy for us librarians, as well as healthcare students, to write well-constructed PICOs.
Please feel free to pass this along. I have no relation with the author(s) nor publishers--just a fan of this valuable work. BTW, there are 13 specialized texts in this series--pediatrics, emergency medicine, herb & dietary supplement, cardiac, urology, infectious diseas, orthopedics, sports medicine, toxicology, neurology, OBGYN, and psychiatry.
Have a great weekend,
Tanya
