I neglected to mention Justin Martyr--Hellenistic Palestinian but taught
> in Rome. He anticipates Clement of Rome on the utterly fundamental
> point of how Christian belief relates to both the Jewish and the

A point that was reiterated in the 19th c by Matthew Arnold, poet, inspector
of schools and son of the famous headmaster, Arnold of Rugby, when he said
that Hebraism and Hellenism were the twin roots of Christianity and so of
all European culture. (IIRC - it was 40 years ago I read this essay ...)
