medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Thank you, Edwin, for that very thoughtful piece. Indeed many
traditions other than the Baptists or indeed the atheists often carry
an anti-Catholic bias. I had noticed this long before I became a
Catholic; indeed it may have influenced my move in that direction.
To give but one example, I own a copy of "Historical Companion to Hymns
Ancient and Modern" which I obtained to find out more about the Latin
texts and early history of some popular modern hymns - an interest
which I have often shared with members of this list. On page (ii) is a
quotation from J. Chandler, "Hymns of the Primitive Church" (1837)
including this sentence:
"Thus are set forms the Hymns, ancient and modern, which are the
peculiar property of the Church of Christ - those which she had before
the Papal Apostasy, and those which have been added to her collection
since . . ."
I know of no reason why one should not be able to obtain a study of
early Latin hymnody without being subjected to such polemic.
Bill.
