Dear Colleague,
As you may know, Jim Reed (for many years President of the English
Goethe Society, and for 15 years Taylor Professor of German at Oxford)
will be retiring this autumn. In addition to a special number of the
periodical Oxford German Studies, which he helped to found forty years
ago and has edited ever since, it was decided to honour him as an
internationally famous scholar with a Festschrift containing articles
by German scholars and by former pupils of Jim. Niemeyer has taken on
publication of the work in Germany, but has required the preliminary
setting work to be done in England, the costs of which they are not
able to cover. We are approaching colleagues in the hope that they
would consider making a modest contribution to these costs (we have in
mind donations of the order of £15-£20), which would be signalled by
including their names in the Tabula Gratulatoria which the volume will
contain (but which would not, of course, imply an obligation to
purchase the volume itself).
Since the publishers have reduced us to an extremely tight time-
schedule for the work, we should need a positive reply very soon (and
at least a promise of small donation!; if a cheque, please make it out
to "Modern Languages Faculty"). Please write, also indicating the form
in which you would like your name to appear* to Nigel Palmer at St.
Edmund Hall, Oxford OX1 4AR ([log in to unmask]) by Friday 14
May.
With many thanks and best wishes,
Kevin Hilliard [kevin.hilliard @st-peters.ox.ac.uk]

* any of the above forms, or e.g. "Rainer Maria Rilke" would be
acceptable, with a preference for an indication of first name(s).
