Hi all,
Since I started this topic, it's probably only fair that I should
contribute as well! I've taught Galician topics in a couple of different
courses, both here at Oxford and, from 2000-2002, at Goldsmiths College,
London.
At Oxford, like Tim, I've taught Rosalia de Castro as part of a survey
course of 19/20-century lit. Only her poetry is included on the syllabus
(which is set centrally, ie, not by me), and the students tend to choose
her because she is the only woman on the syllabus, without realising 2/3 of
her collections are in Galician! As a result, they tend to concentrate
their reading on 'En las orillas del Sar,' but I've found that with
encouragement (and the Akal bilingual edition!), they are usually keen to
read 'Follas novas,' especially, in the original Galician. Obviously,
there's no problem finding secondary material on Rosalia...
I'll let Gabriel tell you about Oxford Galician language teaching
(Gabriel?).
The other course, at Goldsmiths, was a module dedicated to Galicia that was
part of a course on 'Las naciones de Espana.' This syllabus I did put
together myself, and we were lucky to have a selection of texts available
in a choice of English and/or Spanish translation - Rosalia,
Castelao's 'Cousas,' Ferrin's short stories, Rivas's 'O lapis do
carpinteiro.' Each time, I supplied the students with the original Galician
version of any extracts we were looking at in detail, and again, it seemed
to work pretty well.
If I was doing it again, I'd definitely want to use the poetry anthology
Silvia mentioned. And I would be very excited to have Sharif's 'History of
Galicia' too!
Ok, enough from me. Anybody else?
Kirsty
