Hello Daniel,
Thanks for circulating this request. My reply is to the list just as a
way of asking others about the extent to which the case we might be able
to offer is innovative or typical. (We certainly didn't have too many
pre-existing scripts for this, although our experience over the last
couple of years has been one of trying to script, to codify, how we
manage and run the sort of module I describe. And we are very
accomplished at the required improv need to pull this off.)
Since 2001, as part of an existing distance learning MBA programme, we
have been offering online modules in a number of subjects. The model is
fairly simple, one of assessed online collaborative work, facilitated by
online tutors. Deliberately internationally-mixed groups of learners
collaborate on a series of tasks and produce a definite output, such as
a series of analyses, a group report, by a certain deadline. Individuals
gain individual grades for online performance and also shared group
grades for the quality of the group output. The technology is simple: we
deliver some content on websites (some also in print) and we conduct the
groupwork on a discussion board. What might be less common is the reach
of the programme, the diversity of the participants. To give one current
example: we're running an online module in Project Management which
currently has around 162 students each working in internationally-mixed
groups of 6. We have learners originally from over 40 different
countries currently located in around 33 countries worldwide on this
module. Are we treading paths that are already well-trodden for UK
institutions here, perhaps the OU aside? Or are there a number of
elements of what we offer here that constitute something worthy of
capturing in a case study? I'd be interested in others' views. And of
course, I write this in the week in which the plug was pulled on the
UKeU.
Best wishes,
Stuart
