The categorization of people through the census procedure has a
long history and it has influenced how states and societies make groups on
the basis of cultural markers and identity choices. In Russia, identity and
language issues were instrumental for delivering soviet nationalities
policy which perceived ethnic groups archetypical human coalitions
legitimizing the state, its structure, and politics. After the break-up of
the USSR, the first post-soviet census in Russia in 2002 provided new
opportunities for registering identities and language situations. Amidst
serious academic debates and political improvising the 2002 census became a
compromise keeping basic principles of the previous practice and bringing
in some new approaches, including recognition of multiple identity and of
some previously denied identity groups. Valerii Tishkov, director of the
Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, was the minister of nationalities
in 1992 and a theorist and organizer of the last Russian census.

This monograph reconsiders many common ideas about the genesis of
the Brest Church Union in 1590-1595, namely the motives of the group of
Russian Orthodox bishops of the Kiev Metropolia. The author shows that the
Union was not so much an effort to unite the Christian world, but rather
working with a conflict between the laity and the episcopate of the Kiev
Metropolia on the program of church reforms. The Union with Rome was for
the Kievan Metropolia the way of strengthening its own position in conflict
with the laity and their vision of church reform. Based on many sources,
the monograph proves that the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox Churches
had very different visions of the Union and different ecclesiastics in the
16th century. Bibliography, name index.

in emigration he collected evidence about the actions of the OGPU-NKVD
against Russian emigration, first of all against the Russian army. The
first version of this book was published in 1979 in the USA, then in 1993
in Russia. Though Prianishnikov did not know about some operations of the
NKVD (like the abduction of Generals Kutepov and Miller), this book is
still full of facts and stories which are more interesting than many
historical novels. Bibliography.
