CASE Studentship 2004
Social Learning, Citizenship and the Role of Public Involvement:
A Waste and Resource Management Context
Supervisors: Professor Judith Petts and Dr James Evans (University of Birmingham), Mr John Wade (Onyx UK Ltd).
Stipend: ESRC plus £2K per annum
Start Date: October 2004
Public participation in environmental decision-making potentially enhances social responsibility and learning. However, there are strong arguments that social, cultural and institutional contexts are crucial. People do not change beliefs or behaviour just because they have been given more information or been provided with mechanisms to influence decisions. Empirical evidence is required on the impact of the new culture and modes of public engagement. In this context, this CASE award is with Onyx UK Ltd (Onyx), a major waste management contractor directly involved in the promotion and delivery of local integrated waste management contracts. The case studies for the studentship will include Hampshire and East Sussex, the objectives being to (i) identify how communities engage with resource recovery initiatives, (ii) understand the nature and sources of interest and concerns and of consequent information demands upon operators, regulators and the local authorities, (iii) understand the impact over time of a more open and inclusive management style, on public knowledge of resource management, concerns, and 'acceptance' of required facilities, and (iv) identify whether understanding of broader resource management imperatives are enhanced through access to, and engagement with, resource recovery initiatives.
Closing Date For Applications University of Birmingham: mid-June 2004 latest.
Eligibility: UK/EU applicants only (note EU applicants are not eligible for stipend).
